> SYRIA: SHOUTING VALLEY
Photographs by IVO SAGLIETTI - text by JOSEPHINE DEROBE (Ref: 318_50088)
Now that the US is nearly through with 'regime change' in Iraq, Syria could be the next on queue for gunboat diplomacy. Washington has an agenda of change for the Middle East which goes wider. It wants to encourage a "democratic domino" effect, starting with Iraq. US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he expects to visit Syria very soon. Mr Powell said his trip would also seek to push forward peace-making efforts between Israel and the Palestinians. Syria says that it remains open to a dialogue with Israel but only if it gets the whole of the Golan Heights back, which it lost in the 1967 war.
Following the Six days war, Israel annexed the Syrian Heights of Golan. To make safe the most significant occupied territory (11 000 residents), Israel decided to cross the valley into two parts and to prohibit any communication and any access to the border to the Golan-Druzes inhabitants, residing on the other side of the valley. The families separated for 35years by this border have called it the "shouting valley", because it is the single mean which they have to communicate. In Madjal Shams, the divided families go at the UNO-platform to shout over the barbed wires and to share, thanks to a megaphone, the joys and the sorrows of the rest of the group: burial, marriage, birth, demonstration.
